Learner Driving License
Obtaining a learner or apprentice license is the first and mandatory step toward receiving a driving license for any type of motor vehicle.
There are two types of licenses in Bangladesh: non-professional and professional. While non-professional licenses have no subcategories, professional licenses are divided into three categories based on the weight of the vehicle:
- Light Motor Vehicles (under 2500 kg) – Minimum age: 20 years.
- Medium Motor Vehicles (2500–6500 kg) – Minimum age: 23 years and must hold a light vehicle license for at least 3 years.
- Heavy Motor Vehicles (over 6500 kg) – Minimum age: 26 years and must hold a medium vehicle license for at least 3 years.

Learner Driving License Application Process
To apply for a learner driving license, you need to register or log in to the BRTA Service Portal. Make sure to provide accurate information and complete all steps carefully. After submitting your application, you must pay the required fee at the BRTA station lane to proceed.

If you don’t have an account: Register using your NID number, date of birth, and mobile number (must be linked to your NID)
If you already have an account: Sign in with your registered mobile number or email and password
After logging in, click on Driving License Application
Fill out the application form with correct information in both Bengali and English
Submit the application and pay the required fee.
Application will only proceed after payment is made.

Scanned copy of utility bill (if present address is different from NID address)

Driving License Tests
To obtain a full driving license, the applicant must pass three tests:
- Written Test
- Oral (Verbal) Test
- Field (Practical) Test

On the test day, biometric data (digital photo, signature, and fingerprints) will be taken.

Applying for a Smart Card Driving License
After passing all three tests, applicants must once again log in to the BRTA portal, upload the required documents, and pay the applicable fees to apply for the smart card driving license.

Smart Card License Fee:
- Professional License (5-year validity): BDT 2,487
- Non-professional License (10-year validity): BDT 4,212
Applicants for a professional license must also submit a Dope Test Certificate.
Once all exams are passed successfully, you must log into your BRTA service portal and pay the smart card fee online.
After payment:
- You will receive an e-driving license within 1 to 7 days, which you can use for driving.
- The smart card will then be printed and mailed to your registered address via postal service. A delivery fee must be paid at the time of application.

How to Get a Dope Test Certificate?
- Collect the dope test form and reference slip from any BRTA circle office using a copy of your learner license or NID.
- The test can be done at any BRTA-designated hospital.
- The cost for the test may vary between BDT 800–1000 depending on the hospital.
Note:
Currently, BRTA takes about 2 to 3 months to issue the driving license. Therefore, if you have received proper driver training, you do not need to depend on agents or middlemen to get your license.
